Are you a partner with your horse?
Rick Stowers has that knack of matching horses and riders. He has written several
lessons and adds some from time to time about how to find and keep that perfect
horse. Let us know what you think below.
Rick's Philosophy...
Number One: It all begins with the horse. That is the first thing to remember. The
horse needs to choose you instead of you choosing the horse.
Number Two: The next thing is that it's better if the horse and you choose each
other. You may have one that you see on the internet or in an ad and go to the
barn to check it out and fall for a totally different horse. When you meet the horse
you will know if the connection is right.
Number Three: There are three levels of horse and rider bonding. Physical,
mental and spiritual. Each level is more in depth than the level before it. An
example of the highest level would be a novice rider on a ex-race horse. The
horse and rider have such a bond that they are one in spirit and make a great
combination. This is a rare occasion. An example of the mental level is when
your horse reacts to what you are thinking and you react to what the horse is
thinking. Riders with a good connection with their horse have this occur more
easily. You think turn right and the horse turns right. The physical level is what
happens when you and your horse are compatible physically. This has to do with
the horses physical ability, your physical ability, and your expectations of each
other. A large rider on a small horse is not physically a good match. Neither is a
very athletic horse with a novice or unathletic rider. Add to this the activity that
you want to have the horse and rider participate in and that is the expectations.
Here is an example of an immediate bond is Jordan Roberts saddle Karama Trapp
in the middle of a two acre pasture. This when he had not been saddled except
for in a saddle paddock. Bridling him on her knees and then riding him in this
pasture at a nice pretty canter.
Another great match is Barbara and Bonita Mujer aka Gemini. When Barbara met
Gemini she knew she didn't want two things. A mare and a TB. Gemini is both,
but they had that immediate bond and work as an awesome pair riding trails and
in the pasture.
This is why at our ranch (Sierra Ranch) we keep several horses for sale and for
riding. This allows riders to find what it is they are looking for in a horse and test
ride them. We strive to make great matches. Sometimes you find that one horse
on the first trip. Sometimes it may take visiting several other places to realize
that you met the right horse.
We hope you enjoy our philosophy and will come visit Sierra Ranch.
