Would you buy a Doberman for a two year old child?  Or maybe a Basset hound as
a guard dog?  How about a pug as a racing dog?

It is amazing that people know what kind of dogs will go in what kind of situation,
but folks don't seem to put a lot of thought into what breed of horse they purchase
for their children or themselves.

As exerted from "The Book of the Horse" edited by Judith Draper:  Today there are
more than 150 distinct breed and types of horse and pony, three of which are
recognized as having had profound influence upon many of the others:  the
Arabian, the Barb and the Andalusian.  When it comes to new breeds, however,
there is nothing to compare with man's crowning achievement:  the Thoroughbred.

While Thoroughbreds and Arabians (the two "hot-blood" breeds) may not be for
everyone, they can be a great addition to any herd.  They are very easy to teach
new jobs after having successful race careers.  They are more sensitive to a
rider's feelings than other breeds.

This is why at Sierra Ranch we keep several ex -race horses for sale and for
riding.  This allows riders to find what they are looking for in a horse and test ride
them.  We strive to make great matches.  Sometimes you find that one horse on
the first trip.  Sometimes it may take visiting several other places to realize that
you met the right horse.

We hope you enjoy our philosophy and will come visit Sierra Ranch.
