Or really trained VS gentle.

Many people confuse the murky terms "broke to ride" and trained.  As well as ... Calm
with gentle.

In reality most people do not want a fully trained horse.  On a finished horse each
cue or aid is responded to crisply and immediately.  Many riders are not able to sit a
finished horse's movements.  A finished jumper certainly responds to cues differently
than a finished roping horse.  However, both respond immediately to what they think
the rider asked.  So with a finished trained horse "be careful what you ask for cause
you are going to get it."
Now these "push button" horses are not always gentle.  Gentle horses have a different
type of personality - they actually crave human attention.  They beg to be petted,
brushed, washed, doted upon, etc.  But just remember that gentle does not usually
equate to a highly competitive show jumper or barrel horse.

So when you hear "broke to ride" ask do they mean trained or gentle?  This will
always get the sellers attention and make you seem more "horse savvy" than they
originally thought.

We hope you enjoy our philosophy and will come visit Sierra Ranch.
